DETROIT, Mich. (WANE) -- General Motors said the Fort Wayne plant will increase production, with hopes to hire around 225 temporary employees in an announcement Thursday.
According to an article from Reuters, the General Motors Fort
Wayne assembly plant announced in a webcast to employees that it would increase production of light-duty trucks.
The announcement comes as Automaker Stellantis announced it would be temporarily halting production at a plant in Canada and a plant in Mexico shortly after President Donald Trump announced a 25% tariff on imported vehicles. The move will result in the temporary layoff of 900 U.S. employees, including some in Indiana.
According to the Reuters article, because of this increase in production, 225 to 250 temporary positions will be added, "to support current manufacturing and business needs."
General Motors Senior Director of News Relations Kevin Kelly told WANE 15, "General Motors will be making operational adjustments at Fort Wayne Assembly, including hiring temporary employees, to support current manufacturing and business needs. We continuously update and revise production schedules as part of our standard process of evaluating and aligning to manage vehicle inventory."
Senator Jim Banks said in response to the increase of truck production, “Today’s announcement from General Motors is great news for Hoosiers. It hasn’t even been 24 hours and President Trump’s plan is already delivering for working families in Indiana in a big way.”
In February 2025, General Motors hired 100 temporary workers.
