ublic on Friday, April 4 at 10 a.m.Tyson was born and raised in New York City, attending Bronx High School of Science, Harvard for an undergraduate degree in physics, then earning a Ph.D. in astrophysics from Columbia University. He was appointed by President George W. Bush to serve on two separate commissions: one in 2001 studying the Future of the U.S. Aerospace Industry, and again in 2004 to help implement the United States Space Exploration Policy.In 2006, Tyson was appointed to serve on NASA’s Advisory Council, which guides the agency in through the process of seeing their ambitious visions also fit into restricted budgets set by the government.He has written for dozens of professional publications, and was a monthly essayist for the magazine “Natural History” from 1995 to 2005. Tyson has also authored 15 books, including his memoir, “The Sky is Not the Limit: Adventures of an Urban Astrophysicist,” and “Origins: Fourteen Billion Years of Cosmic Evolution, co-written with Donald Goldsmith.”Not confined to the literary realm, Tyson appeared as the on-camera host for the PBS NOVA mini-series “Origins,” and for five seasons was the host of PBS NOVA’s spinoff program “NOVA ScienceNOW.”Tyson is the recipient of 23 honorary doctorates and the NASA Distinguished Public Service Medal. He is the director of the Hayden Planetarium in New York City and the inaugural Frederick P. Rose Director.
