AUSTIN (KXAN) -- A very warm and humid end to the afternoon with some areas approaching 90º today...unless you're in the Hill Country. A cold front has sagged far enough south to keep parts of
San Saba and Lampasas in the 60s for now!
Still, the proximity of this cold front to the area could serve as the focal point for isolated to widely scattered showers or even severe thunderstorms into this evening and overnight. Rain chances are only around 10-20%, but large hail and damaging wind would be possible in any storm.
Severe weather risk today/tonight (SPC)
The greatest risk for any severe storm this evening or tonight would be northwest of Austin.
Friday into Saturday morning
Friday marks the beginning of a much more active 36 hour period for Central Texas. We expect scattered showers and isolated thunderstorms gradually develop in the morning before lowering in coverage during the afternoon.
Rain chances on Friday
While isolated severe storms are possible in the morning, some sunshine and the warming air may help to generate a few severe thunderstorms as early as late Friday afternoon and into Friday evening.
A round of much more widespread rain and storms arrives in the pre-dawn hours of Saturday morning along with a strong cold front.
Widespread rain early Saturday
This round also carries the potential for some severe thunderstorms.
Severe risk Friday into early Saturday morning (SPC)
The highest severe weather threat Friday into early Saturday will be large hail followed by damaging wind. A very low tornado risk also exists and localized flooding is possible, mainly in the Hill Country where the greatest odds of 1" of rain exist.
Severe weather threats Friday into Saturday morning
Most of us should expect a quarter inch to 1" with the lowest amounts southeast of Austin.
Rainfall coverage will be scattered on Friday, but widespread Friday night into early Saturday morning.
Rain chances rise Friday night
The daylight hours of Saturday start wet with lingering showers, but we'll see a drying trend during the morning giving way to a mostly cloudy, breezy and cooler afternoon.
Sunday
The coolest day of the week ahead should be Sunday as the impacts of Saturday morning's cold front are felt the most. We'll have morning clouds to afternoon sun, but highs won't get out of the 60s! It will be a dry day, but a breezy one.
Sunday night into Monday morning, the persistent wind combined with lows in the 40s will make for wind chills in the 30s! Hopefully you didn't put the winter coat away for your children just yet, because you may want to bring it out for early Monday.
Next week
Generally next week will feature a slow warming trend, plenty of sun and no hope for rain.
