The Active Age delivers free copies to thousands of seniors

WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) — The Active Age, an often overlooked publication, serves thousands of senior citizens in Sedgwick, Butler and Harvey counties. It puts them in the spotlight.
"When you think about a senior, you think about this sweet little old lady sitting in a rocking chair with gray ha
ir and drinking iced tea," said Sharon Van Horn, The Active Age board president.
The paper is filled with stories that shatter that stereotype.
"People who are 60 years and older that are doing great things, and we like to bring those things to other people's attention, to, like I said, show that you can live a great life at any age," said Joe Stumpe, The Active Age editor.

Over 50,000 seniors received a free copy each month.
"They grew up reading a paper, newspaper. They like having something physical that they can open and keep around," Stumpe said.
The pages provide a connection to the community.
"We probably list 50 to 100 activities every single month," Stumpe said.
"There's a lot of people out there and a lot of organizations that value them and would like them to be involved," Van Horn said.
A resource that's priceless for seniors comes with a pricey challenge.
"Postage now is $17,000 a month. So this year, we'll pay about twice as much in postage as we did four years ago."

Stump says rates have gone up six times since 2021. The paper is also online, but it knows the value of keeping print alive.
"What we hear most often is, I can hardly wait to get the newspaper, and I sit down with a cup of coffee and read it cover to cover," Van Horn said.
