INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — The Indiana National Guard has been called out to help with recovery in at least 41 of Indiana’s 92 counties after Wednesday’s storms, the governor’s office announced Thursday afternoon.
For the second time in five days, Hoosiers we
re cleaning up damage left behind by severe thunderstorms and tornadoes.
About 50 soldiers based in units in the southern Indiana cities of Jasper, Vincennes and Seymour will assist Hoosiers with damage assessments, recovery efforts and flooding prevention in an effort nicknamed Operation Sandcastle, the governor’s office says.
Units in the central Indiana cities of Bedford, Terre Haute and Indianapolis, and the southern Indiana city of Chandler could be activated later if needed.
More than 59,000 Hoosiers remained without power at 2:12 p.m. Thursday. Multiple school districts — including Indianapolis Public Schools — shifted to e-learning for Thursday.
Police reported downed power lines and trees in the streets across Indianapolis. Some intersections on Thursday morning did not have working traffic signals due to power outages. AES Indiana reported nearly 19,000 power outages at 2:20 p.m. AES said Thursday morning that crews would work throughout the day to restore power to roughly 25,000 customers, prioritizing those who have been without power the longest.

Here’s a look at some of the areas hardest hit by severe weather:
Brownsburg
The National Weather Service during their Thursday surveys confirmed an EF-2 tornado moved through Brownsburg Wednesday night. Survey teams clarified that this damage and tornado ranking is preliminary, and further information will be released once surveys are completed.
Cleanup will take a while in Brownsburg, where the tornado tore apart a large portion of the Sur La Table warehouse at 901 E. Northfield Drive. Local firefighters spent several hours trying to rescue a woman who was trapped under the rubble.
“We were able to pull that individual out…after getting a couple of rotators out here to help lift that debris, as well as the Indianapolis Fire Department Special Rescue Team to get in there,” Kam Holding, public information officer for the Avon Fire Department, told News 8.
Two other people were also found inside the damaged warehouse. One was taken to the hospital, firefighters say.
The damage to the warehouse is extensive and the structure is not safe, says News 8’s Melea VanOstrand.
“A large portion of the warehouse is collapsed, with fire alarms still going off,” VanOstrand said at around 6 a.m. Thursday. “Steel is dangling from the top and you can hear it creaking. The Avon Fire Department says the storms destroyed multiple parts of the warehouse.”
Third-shift employees at the warehouse told VanOstrand that they couldn’t do their regular duties but were there to “make sure there isn’t any looting of the kitchen products inside.”
Carmel
A tornado tore through the Carmel area on Wednesday night, tearing down trees and pulling down powerlines.
One business at Third Street and Carmel Drive had a wall ripped off, according to I-Team 8’s Tim Spears.
“A manufacturing business had the front of the building just ripped off its face. This is Rikon International and you can see straight into the offices, the snacks behind the desks, the art on the wall, but then right in front of it, what used to be the wall along with shattered glass just out along the ground,” Spears said at the scene.
The Carmel Fire Department told News 8’s Hernan Gutierrez that they did not have to treat anyone for injuries while responding to storm damage Wednesday night. No injuries were reported at the Rikon International building.
Columbus
In Columbus, hundreds of people waited out the storms at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church.
News 8’s Cat Sandoval was there and talked to some of the people taking shelter.
“Our daughter goes to school here, and we do not have a basement in our home, just a crawl space. And we heard they’re opening up the church for people to come for safety…and it’s been a blessing,” Angie Engledow said.
Muncie
Muncie’s Animal Care & Services suffered extensive damage to its roof, the agency reported on Facebook. No animals in the shelter were injured, but water leaked into parts of the building.
Surveying the storm
Teams from the National Weather Service on Thursday spanned Indiana to survey the damage to determine if it was caused by straight-line winds or tornadoes.
More rain is in the forecast for the next few days and flooding will be a concern. Get the latest forecast in the Storm Track 8 weather blog.
