Status of financial aid after Education Department executive order
INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Students are expressing concerns about financial aid following President Donald Trump’s recent executive order to dismantle the Department of Education.
Despite the executive order, the Free Applicati
on for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) remains open and operational, according to Bill Wozniak, VP and chief marketing officer of InvestED.
“We’re getting a lot of phone calls from people wondering if things have stopped as they get ready for the fall. That’s not the case. Things are continuing and we want people to move forward,” Wozniak said Thursday on Daybreak.
Wozniak emphasized that students should not be deterred by recent headlines and should proceed with filing the FAFSA, especially with the Indiana priority deadline approaching on April 15.
“The FAFSA is open and the FAFSA is working. People are able to file. People are able to get that processed. We don’t want people to think that it’s not there (or) students can’t get the aid. They can, and they need, to file that form.”
While the Small Business Administration will now handle student loans, there are still income-based repayment and consolidation options available.
Wozniak noted that the rules for repayment options can change, which is why it’s important for students and graduates to stay informed about their options. He also addressed concerns about affordability, reminding that during the COVID-19 pandemic, payments were paused, but now repayments must resume.
Students and graduates are encouraged to explore their financial aid options and remain proactive in managing their student loans, as changes continue to unfold.
