Gov. McMaster defends state right to exclude abortion providers from Medicaid plan
Apr 03, 2025
(WPDE) — During the oral arguments for Medina v. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic on Wednesday before the United States Supreme Court, Gov. Henry McMaster defended South Carolina’s right to exclude abortion providers from the Medicaid program.
Planned Parenthood would be included among the
abortion providers no longer supported by Medicaid. Gov. McMaster affirmed South Carolina’s authority to enact policies and reflect priorities.
“The right to life is the most precious of rights, and it is also the most fragile. We must never let it be taken for granted,” said Governor Henry McMaster. “Today has been years in the making. I am optimistic that the Court will recognize that Congress never intended for taxpayers to be forced into subsidizing abortion providers like Planned Parenthood.”
Gov. McMaster’s 2018 Executive Order was the origin of this case, according to the release. It directed the South Carolina Dept. of Health and Human Services to remove abortion clinics from the Medicaid provider list in South Carolina.
