Johnston may use eminent domain again for public safety complex land
Apr 03, 2025
JOHNSTON, R.I. (WLNE) — The Johnston Town Council is holding a special meeting Thursday on the plot of land that was set to be taken by eminent domain until a lawsuit restarted that process.
The council will discuss the plot along George Waterman Road which was going to be turned into lower inc
ome housing.
In December, Mayor Joseph Polisena, Jr moved to take that land through eminent domain to construct a new public safety complex.
The owners of the land, the Santora family, sued Mayor Polisena and the town of Johnston in March.
However, lawyers for Johnston and the realty company that owns the land agreed to dismiss the lawsuit and start the process over again.
The town council will discuss the possibility of using eminent domain to take the land a second time.
That meeting is at 5:30 p.m. at Johnston Municipal Court.
