Local political consultant reacts to Trump's tariffs on imports
Apr 02, 2025
CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - The global trade war continues to intensify after the Trump Administration announced new sweeping tariffs on foreign goods outside the White House Wednesday afternoon.
It has sparked significant controversy around the world. 22News spoke with a local political consultant
tonight about what this means for your wallet, as these tariffs start to go into effect in the next couple of days.
President Donald Trump is pledging reciprocal tariffs on all trading partners as the trade war between the US and the globe intensifies.
Here's a breakdown of those tariffs starting April 5th:
A baseline of 10% on all imports but some are as high as 49%
Foreign-made automobiles will see 25% tariffs
China's 34%, in addition to the existing 20% rate already imposed
Tariffs will also hit countries including the European Union at 20% and Taiwan at 25%
Canada and Mexico have been spared from additional tariffs for now
22News asked Political Consultant Anthony Cignoli how the rollout of these tariffs will impact western Massachusetts consumers. Cignoli answered, "Consumers---we are going to feel it. You are going to see it---no question---at the grocery store. On every single item, there is. Any paper products--the majority of that material coming out of Canada. With that size of tariff, you do that math and say, "Holy smokes!" This isn't 10-20 cents more on a roll of toilet paper or on a paper towel, this is a buck or more. I think we are going to see that now."
And as economic uncertainty weakens consumer confidence, US consumers now brace for retaliatory tariffs from other countries.
Again, April 5th is when the global tariffs take effect.
