WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- "The Gr8 Chase" continues to build excitement as Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin is just four goals away from the all-time scoring record in the NHL.
There are eight games left in the regular season and 30 countdown clocks have popped up around the D.C. area for
fans to follow along.
Ben's Chili Bowl on U Street - home to classic half-smokes and one of those clocks - was filled to the brim with conversation on the countdown.
"I think he's going to make it before the end of the season," said Charlie Evans.
Ovechkin inched his way closer to making history as he scored his 891st career goal Tuesday night against the Boston Bruins.
Ovechkin scores No. 891. He needs 3 to tie Gretzky and 4 to pass him
"He's been doing a heck of a job. I mean that's unheard of to be approaching Gretzky's records. Are you kidding?" Evans said.
Ben's Chili Bowl owner Kamal Ali feels the thrill, too.
"We're just, you know, making history. [Ovechkin] is making history," Ali said. "Man, this is huge. You know, the number one of all time. If he hits this goal, which of course he will, it's just amazing."
Other countdown clocks are at ice rinks, restaurants and landmarks around the DMV.
"We have some that have made their way all the way up to NHL shop right in Manhattan," said Morgan Hannel, Washington Capitals director of marketing and special initiatives.
Hannel said the clocks are all about rallying together and engaging fans.
"It's amazing to see and be a part and witness this history. You know, with the veteran having spent his entire career here, there's a lot of enthusiasm and excitement as everybody's been counting down with us and inching closer and closer to that record," Hannel said.
Ovechkin's chase is almost at the finish line, with three goals needed to tie and four to beat Gretzky's record.
"He can do a hat-trick any time, so a couple more games we're going to be there," Ali said.
His next chance is Wednesday night at 7 p.m. as the Caps take on the Hurricanes in North Carolina. ...read more read less
