New fee to designate $5M to Fresno State Athletics

FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - Beginning this fall, the instructionally related activities fee for Fresno State students will increase from $628 to $1,123.
It's the first time the university has raised the fee in 16 years.
The increase is projected to bring in more than $11.3 million to the univ
ersity. What's getting criticized is the $5 million that will be designated to the athletics department.
That total outpaces second second-place holder by more than two and a half times and is 43% of the total increase.
The move comes as the university prepares to move into the PAC-12 next year.
Students say they don't believe the money is being distributed properly.
“It's disheartening in a sense, it's tough you wanna support your school,l but at the same time it's hard to pay those fees that go directly towards them,” said Guadalupe Zamudo Telles.
“Fresno State does not have a money problem, it has a money management problem,” said Matthew Casarez.
Phong Yang is the Interim Vice President of Student Affairs and says the change was not made lightly.
