(KRON) -- A hip Bay Area eatery has topped a prestigious list of the best restaurants in the U.S. Burdell, a California soul food spot in Oakland, has been named the top restaurant in the country by Food & Wine. Opened in 2023 by acclaimed chef Geoff Davis, Burdell was previously named Food &am p; Wine's 2024 restaurant of the year and was crowned as an Icon by OpenTable's editors. Davis, a James Beard Award-semifinalist, named Burdell after his maternal grandmother, who loved "well-set tables, shared meals and laughter," according to the City of Oakland website. Food & Wine called Burdell a "totally fresh take on California soul food" and compared its interior to "a grandmother's sitting from the 1970s, complete with vintage Corelle china and soul playing on the retro stereo system."
