FARMINGTON, N.M. (KRQE) – A Farmington woman and McCormick Elementary third-grade teacher, 51-year-old Heather Fernandez-Hoefer, has been arrested in connection to the 2020 murder of her husband, Robert Hoefer, 49. She is facing charges of second-degree murder and tampering with evidence.
Rob
ert Hoefer was found dead with stab wounds in the couple's South Ivie Avenue residence on the morning of November 29, 2020, after Fernandez-Hoefer called his death into 911. The affidavit details Fernandez-Hoefer's various versions of what happened, and it eventually concludes that her "inconsistent and unlikely statements are signs of deception."
Fernandez-Hoefer's statements vary greatly in both the timeline and manner of death, but, throughout the affidavit, she says that Hoefer stabbed himself in the computer room of their home while she was out of the room; when she found out about the injuries, she helped him clean up his chest; they went to bed separately, and she later found him face-down on the floor of their bedroom.

The affidavit explains that the majority of blood evidence was located on the bed rather than the floor, no blood evidence was located outside of the bedroom - apart from the washcloth said to be used to wipe his chest - and, according to the autopsy, Hoefer's three stab wounds were deep enough to puncture his lungs and sever his coronary artery, which would have killed him in minutes.
The affidavit also explains that cell phone evidence revealed that the two had a recent argument concerning money and Hoefer's prior relationship. According to the affidavit, the next-door neighbor reported hearing a man and woman arguing between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m. the night of Hoefer's death.
Based on the contradicting statements and evidence, a warrant was issued for Fernandez-Hoefer's arrest, and she was taken into custody on Tuesday, April 1. The school district confirmed that Fernandez-Hoefer is on administrative leave. The case is still under investigation, and anyone with additional information should contact Farmington police detectives at 505-599-1068. ...read more read less
