The series of tragedies started a week ago, after a medical emergency at Portales High School led to a female student dying in a Lubbock hospital days later.
"As a community, we all found out pretty fast, you know, she was an amazing young lady. She was beautiful, " said Brenda Lujan.
While Lujan grieved with her community, she never expected her family would be impacted next. On Sunday morning, her son, 16-year-old Xavier, was in the passenger seat of a car driving back to Portales. The driver lost control and the car flipped, ejecting Xavier. "They came and informed me my son had passed away from his injuries," said Lujan. "It's just a tragedy that was an accident. It feels like empty space I have in my heart right now."
Lujan said her son was a bright light in the community, a star track and football player, and loved his family. "My son loved everybody. My son had this smile that was so contagious," said Lujan.
As the families try to cope, communities and school districts across the state have come together to let them know they're not alone. Areas like Roswell, Artesia, Lovington, Hobbs, and dozens more wore red on Tuesday to show support. "It's been amazing. The love, the support that we have all gotten from them is just tremendous," said Lujan.
On Wednesday, that love continued as lines of busses sit outside Portales High School covered with notes for students and staff. "It brings peace to my heart to know that my son was able to spread his love the way he did," said Lujan.
