RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- Richmond firefighters battled heavy smoke and fire at a Richmond packaging company late Tuesday night. Firefighters with the Richmond Fire Department were called to Sonoco Product Company, located at 1850 Commerce Road, just before 10 p.m. on Tuesday, April 1. Heavy smoke wa s visible from the upper levels of the building. 8News team members witnessed a massive fire department presence at the facility. 8News reporter Victoria Lucas spoke to a battalion chief at the scene, who said that these crews would likely be working to contain this incident for the rest of Tuesday night. (Photo: Jakobi Davis/8News) That chief added that no injuries have been reported as a result of this incident. This included a woman who was reported to have been in the building at the time. She was able to get herself out safely. On Wednesday, April 2, a spokesperson for the city of Richmond provided additional information. Per that spokesperson, a fire began in a machine located on the first floor of the building. While the bulk of the fire was put out by 11:19 p.m., units remained at the scene for an "extended time" due to both debris and "deep-seated" hot spots.
