WINDSOR, Va. (WAVY) — A backhoe struck a house on Virginia Avenue in Windsor Wednesday morning and a 63-year-old man driving it is in critical condition as police say a medical emergency may have factored into the incident.
The Isle of Wight Emergency Communications Center received a 911 call a
t approximately 11:05 a.m. in reference to a large tractor striking a house, and a man being down on the ground.
When they arrived, Windsor officers found a resident performing CPR on the man. Assisted by members of Windsor Volunteer Fire Department, the Windsor Volunteer Rescue Squad and Isle of Wight County Department of Fire and Rescue, crews took over CPR and continued to provide care.
The man was taken to Sentara Obici Hospital in Suffolk in critical condition.
Six-year-old Asher Boone watched it happen just after 11 a.m.
"He was backing up, then he ran into the house," Asher said.
Asher's mother was in her house when he called out for help.
"'Daddy, Nana needs you,'" Elizabeth Boone heard her son call out. "And we're like, 'What's going on? He's like a construction worker. He's hurt. He's hurt."
Elizabeth Boone, along with her husband Anthony and mother-in-law, ran over to see what happened. Anthony Boone shut off the backhoe and Boone's mother-in-law, a nurse, started rendering aid to the man who was lying on the ground underneath the backhoe.
"We did find a pulse, but it did start to fade some," Elizabeth Boone said. "She was trying to do CPR, but there wasn't much room to where he was on the ground. But he was underneath, and there was about that much space between his chest and the step. She was not able to perform CPR right away."
Rescue workers arrived and continued to provide aide to the 63-year-old man, who was transported to the hospital in critical condition.
According to Windsor Police, the preliminary investigation indicates the man may have suffered a medical emergency while operating the machinery.
The owners of the house were home at the time of the incident and no other injuries were reported.
The investigation into the incident will be handled by the Virginia Department of Labor and Industry. Isle of Wight County Building Inspectors were contacted to inspect the structural integrity of the residence. ...read more read less
