VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (WAVY) - A new venture is up and running in Virginia Beach, giving those on the spectrum the opportunity to share their creativity and business skills. It opened just in time for Autism Acceptance Month.
When you walk through the doors of FACT, or Families of Autism Coming Tog
ether, you will find a shop full of merchandise created by the hands of the neurodivergent. 11-year-old Willow Buesking is autistic and uses her many talents to make Joy Jars.
"You shake it and the charms go, like, slowly up and down, but sometimes fast, and then stop, and then you can watch it go up and down," said Buesking.
Buesking said the Joy Jars can help you relax if you match your breath to the pace of the charms floating up and down.
"It calms you down," she said. "That's why they're called Joy Jars, because they give you joy."
When it's time to make your purchase, a HERO employee will cash you out. HERO stands for Helping Employees Reach Outcomes. It's a program through FACT that gives those with autism paying jobs.
This organization truly spends every moment making sure the neurodivergent community is accepted and has equal opportunities to live good, successful lives.
Willow says she uses the money she earns from her sales at the store to pay for summer camp and other adventures at FACT.
The general hours for the gift shop are Monday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. ...read more read less
