NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — The Orleans Parish School Board has selected Fateama Fulmore to be the next superintendent for NOLA Public Schools in a 5-2 vote.
Fulmore says that even though becoming a full-time superintendent is a dream come true, she says it is time to get to work.

Board members were met with applause after selecting NOLA Public Schools' interim superintendent to permanently lead the school system to success.
"She really cares about the experience that all of our students have every day in every school. She has walked in their shoes. She's walked in the teacher's shoes, she's walked in. The principals, the administrators. She's really been at every level," said NOLA school board President Katherine Baudouin.

Tears of joy from Fulmore as she said her first three days would be filled with getting out and sitting with the people who have been invested and committed to this community all their lives.
"Making connections out in the community in the new role and telling a story about the future of NOLA Public Schools and how the community and all stakeholders can be part of building that future," said Fulmore.
After the school system found itself in a $50 million deficit, Fulmore says putting together a designated finance team will help pull them out of the financial crisis.
"Help us monitor indicators of distress for school finances, making sure that our tools are valid and stronger than they were so that if we're making projections and we're giving advice to our schools is coming from very sound data," said Fulmore.
Before wrapping up, board members reaffirmed there will be honest conversations between the two to ensure there is a clear vision for the school system going forward.
"We will give you the what we want, and you will give us the how. We understand our role and we give you your space to make the things that we will need to be done, done and done with excellence and expertise," said NOLA school board Vice President Leila Jacobs Eames.
The board plans to meet with Fulmore next week to negotiate on a contract.
She steps into the position months after former Superintendent Avis Williams resigned from the role.
