FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – As another round of heavy rain heads toward Fort Wayne, some residents are bracing for more than just wet roads, they’re preparing for rising water in their yards and streets.
Lisa Davis, who lives on East Washington Center Road, says every time there’s a downpour
her property floods, making it difficult to get in and out of her home.
“Every time it rains hard, my yard turns into a lake, and the street floods,” she told WANE 15. “I’ve called the city, but they say it’s not their problem.”
City officials said they monitor river levels closely and maintain flood control systems, including 12 miles of levees. The Fort Wayne Public Works Division also oversees the Voluntary Floodplain Home Buyout Program, which has removed more than 210 homes from high-risk flood zones over the past 30 years.
“We work to protect homes and businesses as much as possible,” Patrick Zaharako, Flood Control Manager said. “We also provide resources for residents to track flooding and take precautions.”
For those concerned about flooding in their area, the city provides real-time river level tracking and flood risk information. You can check current and future crest levels on the City of Fort Wayne’s River Levels page and learn more about the Floodplain Buyout Program here.
Officials remind residents to avoid driving through flooded streets and to clear storm drains of debris to help with water flow.
