FLORENCE, S.C. (WBTW) -- A Florence woman accused of neglecting a 2-year-old girl so severely that the toddler died of a burn wound infection was apologetic during her initial court appearance Wednesday.
"If I could change anything and go back, I would. But I can't change anything, because the da
mage has already been done," Patricia Stafford, 60, said. Florence police charged her unlawful neglect of a child, and she was being held at the Florence County Detention Center on a $5,000 surety bond.
News13 was present on Wednesday. Stafford's next court date is June 30. If convicted, she could get up to 10 years in prison.
Stafford told Municipal Judge E. Lloyd Wilcox the toddler already had the burns prior to being in her care.
"They burned the baby from her knees all the way to her feet. They dropped the baby off at my house, and that's how it started," she said. "I didn't know the burns were that bad, so I was trying to see about it."
Police said between Jan. 8 and 11, the girl was being looked after by Stafford. Capt. Stephen Starling said Stafford is godmother to the child.
Officers found the girl on Jan. 11 after responding to the 900 block of Kershaw Street for a separate matter. Police were already in the area and went to the home after hearing a disturbance. Family told the responding officers that a child was deceased inside the home, Starling said.
The child was found dead in a bedroom.
Police told News13 they believe the burns were caused by water, but are still investigating. Stafford, they added, didn't get proper medical care for the child's burns and the infection that spread.
"I know I was good. I never did anyone no harm. I was a good godmother," Stafford said.
Starling said incidents like this hit close to home for officers.
"Officers do have to deal with it, death and other situations like that. But it is definitely more traumatic and hits home for a lot more officers when it's a child, because they're parents themselves," he said.
An investigation by the Florence Police Department, the Florence County Coroner's Office, and an autopsy showed that the child died as a result of an infection.
Starling said authorities waited until now to make an arrest due to the complexity of the investigation.
