School enrollment in Central Texas: Which districts are the largest?

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Almost 420,000 students are enrolled in school districts and open charters across the KXAN viewing area, as of the 2024-25 school year.
KXAN is keeping track of enrollment data from the Texas Education Agency in 58 school districts and more than 20 open charter schools across the area.
Over the past decade, the number of students enrolled areawide in traditional school districts increased by 34,331 between the 2014-15 and 2024-25 school years. Charter school enrollment increased by 24,263 during the same timeframe.
As of 2024-25, more than 379,000 students are enrolled in districts, while about 39,000 are enrolled in charter schools.
The changes are not uniform in each district. While enrollment areawide grew by 9.9%, several districts grew at a much faster pace. The number of students at both Jarrell ISD and Liberty Hill ISD more than tripled over the past decade, while Coupland ISD more than doubled their student population.
Meanwhile, 18 districts saw enrollment figures fall over the past decade, including Austin ISD, Del Valle ISD, Eanes ISD and Round Rock ISD.

Austin ISD is the largest district in the KXAN viewing area, by far, accounting for almost one in five school district students in the area. TEA data shows there were 72,272 students in the district in the 2024-25 school year, down from 84,564 in 2014-15, a 14.5% decrease.
As of 2024-25, Round Rock ISD, Leander ISD, Pflugerville ISD and Hays CISD round out the top five largest districts. IDEA Public Schools is the largest charter system locally, with more than 10,000 students areawide.
Over the past year alone, Jarrell ISD and Liberty Hill ISD both grew by more than 11%, while Coupland ISD, Thorndale ISD and Hutto ISD saw student enrollment increase by more than 5% each.
Meanwhile, 24 districts have seen enrollment drop over the past year, most notably Richland Springs ISD and Bartlett ISD, both of which had enrollment decreases of more than 10%. Austin ISD's enrollment total dropped about 0.8% over the past year — a loss of 558 students.

Several districts have experienced tremendous growth over the past decade, especially in suburban areas surrounding Austin. Of districts with more than 1,000 students, Jarrell ISD has grown the fastest, up about 229% over the past 10 years. The district grew from 1,265 students in 2014-15 to 4,157 students in 2024-25.
Liberty Hill ISD has also rapidly grown, up by about 205%. While much smaller overall, Coupland ISD is the only other district to grow by more than 100% over the past decade. The district grew by 127%.
Hutto ISD had the third-fastest growth over the past decade among districts with more than 1,000 students, increasing enrollment figures by 73%. Dripping Springs ISD grew by 61%, while Elgin ISD grew by 39% over the decade.
Largest Texas districts
Houston ISD is the largest district in the state, with a little more than 175,000 students as of the 2024-25 school year. Dallas ISD, Cypress-Fairbanks ISD and Northside ISD all have more than 100,000 students.
