Business prepares for severe weather after recovering from floods

FRANKFORT, Ky. (ABC 36 NEWS NOW) — High flood waters in February forced Garrett’s Golf Garage to shut down for nearly a month while they rebuilt what the water destroyed.
“We had just made it out in time, and rode out the water,” owner Garrett Hamilton said. “As it receded, we got to the
real work and started squeegeeing the floors and pressure washing and getting everything cleaned back up.”
Hamilton has owned the golf garage for a year. He says the last time it flooded, they were prepared
and able to pack everything into their trucks before flood waters filled the building.
“Now that we kind of know what to do, how to do, and the steps to take, we’re a little more prepared, so hopefully we can kind of streamline the process and make it all a breeze,” he said.
Garrett’s Golf Garage sits right on the Kentucky River which is expected to rise when the severe weather hits.
“The river, it’s got silt and mud and stuff, so as the water comes in, it brings all that silt and mud,” Hamilton said.
Which, like many other homes and businesses experienced in February, makes the cleanup more difficult.
“We had to clean the walls, take out all of or insulation, redo our bathroom completely,” Hamilton said.
It’s been less than a month since they reopened. Now, they’re facing the same threat that made them close in the first place.
“We’re going to be watching the projected levels of the river, watching those with a hawk eye and making sure that we’re going to be good,” he said.
He says at the end of the day, this is just a business.
“We’re really thinking about the people whose livelihoods may be affected, whose homes may be affected,” Hamilton said. “They won’t have anywhere to go back to, so that’s where our thoughts and prayers are at this time.”
