INDOT prepared for severe weather and widespread flooding, crews on standby

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Severe storms with a tornado threat, heavy rain, and widespread flooding is expected to hit Indiana this afternoon into the evening. The Indiana Department of Transportation said they are prepared for whatever comes their way.
The National Weather Service put half of
the state under a flood watch, including every county south of a line from Terra Haute, past Indianapolis, and up to Muncie. Southern Indiana is focused on the chance of double-digit rainfall totals. “Significant flash an driver flooding is likely in these areas,” INDOT said in their press release.
To prepare for the floods, INDOT crews are clearing drains and getting equipment ready to close any flooded state roads. “Personnel will be on standby throughout the event to address roadway issues that may arise,” INDOT said.
They tell you to be extra careful when driving on flooded roads, since you can never know how deep the water goes.
INDOT says only six inches can knock you off your feet, one foot can carry a small car away, and two feet will leave even SUVs and trucks floating.
“Drivers are urged to follow ‘road closed’ signs and barricades to avoid becoming stranded in flood waters,” INDOT warns. “It is never safe to drive around barricades through high water – remember to Turn Around, Don’t Drown.”
Strong wind gusts, tornadoes, and the water-saturated ground can bring trees and power lines down.
