Sterling Carvalho out as Kahuku football head coach
Apr 02, 2025
Three-time state champion Sterling Carvalho is no longer the head football coach at Kahuku High School.
In a letter sent to parents of student-athletes and obtained by KHON2 Sports, Principal Donna Lindsey wrote: “Coach Sterling Carvalho will no longer be serving as head coach of the KHS Footba
ll Program. Plans are in place to ensure continued support and stability for our student-athletes and the Football Program. An interim head coach will be assigned while we begin the process of selecting a new head coach.”
Billy Hull of the Honolulu Star-Advertiser was the first to report the letter early Wednesday morning.
Carvalho compiled a 59-18 record over six seasons at the helm of the Red Raiders, leading the team to four OIA titles and three consecutive HHSAA Open Division state championships from 2021 to 2023.
His tenure included one of the most high-profile victories in Hawai‘i high school football history — a 30-23 win over then-national champion and No. 3-ranked St. John Bosco (Calif.) in 2023.
An assistant coach, who requested anonymity, confirmed Carvalho’s departure and cited parent complaints regarding alleged favoritism toward certain players as one of the reasons behind the move.
Messages seeking comment have been left with the Kahuku athletics department and other involved parties.
