WILLISTON, ND (KXNET) — A 43-year-old Williston man with six DUI convictions in the past 12 years is facing felony charges after his arrest Saturday on DUI charges.
According to an affidavit from the Williston Police Department, officers responded to a report of a vehicle crash in the city arou
nd 6:30 p.m., March 29.
Witnesses said the vehicle hit a fire hydrant and crashed into a light pole.
The driver was still in the vehicle when officers arrived on the scene.
According to the affidavit, the driver said several times he had been drinking and that he was "extremely intoxicated."
The officer said he noticed the odor of alcohol on the man, his eyes were bloodshot and watery, and his speech was slurred, according to the affidavit.
The driver refused to take a field alcohol test and was arrested.
He then refused to take a chemical test and, after the officer obtained a search warrant to obtain a blood sample, the man refused to comply a third time.
He was taken to the Williams County Correctional Center on charges of Actual Physical Control - Intoxicating Liquor - 4th Or Subsequent Offense in 15 Years; Refusal To Submit To Chemical Test - 4th Offense in 15 years; and Driving Under Revocation - Alcohol Related.
Since 2013, the driver has been convicted six times for Driving Under the Influence and nine times for driving on a suspended or revoked license.
A preliminary hearing has been set for April 30.
