MassDOT is looking to make improvements to Birnie Avenue near the Ge
rman Gerena School, according to Mass.gov. Their target will be the tunnel that connects to the school used by many students on their way into class. The bridge currently has been subjected to unwanted water infiltration for years and shows signs of deterioration. The improvements also include rehabilitating the deteriorated roadway and parts of the sidewalks, as well as to implement traffic measures to reduce traffic speeds along the passage.
22News heard from concerned parents about the state of the tunnel last year who felt mold and poor upkeep made the tunnel dangerous for students that use it. The state wants to hear from residents about their improvement plans.
A public hearing will be held Wednesday night at 6:00 at the German Gerena School on Birnie Avenue in Springfield.
