One dead after semitruck collides with SUV on I71, north of Downtown, Columbus

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) – One person is dead after an overnight collision between a vehicle and a semi-truck in north Columbus early Wednesday morning.
According to Columbus police, a crash occurred between an SUV and a semi-truck at around 1:40 a.m. Wednesday on Interstate 71 North, near the Int
erstate 670 interchange. The driver of the vehicle was pronounced dead at 2:23 a.m.

Police said that a Nissan Rouge, traveling north on I-71, came to a stop in the middle of the highway for reasons yet not known. At the same time an International semi-trailer truck approached the SUV, which was obstructing traffic.
The semi-truck slammed into the SUV in the rear of the vehicle and 22-year-old Jahara Tunkara suffered life threatening injuries. He was taken to an area hospital and pronounced dead a shor time later.
Ohio Department of Transportation highway cameras showed a vehicle heavily damaged while resting on the right lane and the semi-truck parked several feet in front with tire marks trailing it.
The crash resulted in both north and southbound lanes to close for about an hour before the southbound lanes opened after about an hours. The semi involved was leaking fuel onto the roadway, causing the northbound lanes to close for several hours, until approximately 5:30 a.m.
Police have not specified the cause of the crash, which remains under investigation. No other injuries were reported. ...read more read less
