Art show in Chicopee tackles mental illness stigma
Apr 01, 2025
CHICOPEE, Mass. (WWLP) - The power of art as a tool for coping with mental health challenges was in the spotlight Tuesday night in Chicopee.
The art show has been hosted by the National Alliance on Mental Illness of Western Massachusetts (NAMI) for over a decade now.
It features over 100 art a
nd poetry works---some for sale---by artists living with mental health conditions. Organizers told 22News that art does not only serve as a coping mechanism but can help break the stigma and humanize those facing mental health challenges. "A lot of our peers are here so that they feel proud of what they've done," says both Catherine Rogers and Tamari Cole with NAMI. "Some feel "I could never do that," and we are like, "Yes you can!"
The exhibit runs the entire month of April at the Chicopee Public Library and all proceed go directly back to the artists.
