It wasn't a typical day at the ballpark, as the Rio Rancho junior varsity baseball team played La Cueva last week. According to an email to parents by La Cueva Principal, Darrell Garcia, a Rio Rancho JV player peed in a water jug being used by the Bears, which some players than drank from. In that email, Garcia said in part, "We immediately reached out to our counterparts in Rio Rancho, and a police investigation was launched."
The email sent on March 31 said they were informed that day the Rio Rancho students admitted to the despicable behavior and that authorities in Rio Rancho are in the process of filing criminal charges. Garcia goes on to say, "Words cannot express how sorry we are that this happened. Behavior like this is disgusting and unacceptable."
A spokesperson for Rio Rancho Public Schools told News 13 in a statement on Tuesday:
Rio Rancho Public Schools (RRPS) is aware of the recent allegations made against several members of the Rio Rancho High School Junior Varsity Baseball team. The district is currently working with internal investigators as well as the Rio Rancho Police Department (RRPD) to perform an in-depth and exhaustive investigation into the incident. Based on the results of this investigation, the district will move forward with appropriate disciplinary measures, in conjunction with RRPD. RRPS officials have reported the alleged incident to the New Mexico Activities Association (NMAA) and have been in contact with officials from the affected school and APS district leadership.
We want to make it clear that the alleged behavior is abhorrent and does not represent the standards and values expected of all students who attend Rio Rancho Public Schools. If determined to be true, the discipline for all those involved will be severe. The district is appreciative of those who reported the incident and would like to encourage any students who hear about or see inappropriate behavior taking place to report it immediately to school staff and parents.

The NMAA said they are working with RRPS as they finalize the investigation. At this time, they wouldn't comment on whether this action could result in a strike for the Rio Rancho JV baseball program.
La Cueva urged JV parents who are concerned their child drank from the jug to reach out to a medical professional for any potential health risks.
