NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) — A construction project in Gentilly has become more than an inconvenience, it's costing homeowners hundreds of dollars in damage after more than six vehicles were broken into overnight.
The incident occurred at the intersection of Prentiss Avenue and Cameron Boulevard, w
here residents explained that ongoing construction has blocked off their streets, forcing many to park their vehicles in neutral ground areas.

"My neighbor woke me up to let me know that our cars had been broken in," Joyce Raphael said. "The windows were shattered, some were completely out, like mine. I have a sick husband in here who I can't get out to go even to the doctor at times because of the fact that everything is so in disarray."

Residents say there was no security, extra patrols or warning that their vehicle could become an easy target.
"It's really devastating to us. I'm really afraid almost to park my car there because I'm going to get my my windows done. And I don't want the same thing to happen," Raphael said.
We contacted Councilman Eugene Green to inquire whether he plans to advocate for increased security in the area. Here is his response:
"I will be asking for increased patrols because this is a criminal who doesn't mind discomforting others and frightening others," Green said. "And we will address that."
Green also emphasized that this type of crime is a serious offense, one that could result in those responsible being sentenced to prison.
"Those crimes are accompanied by state laws, which could potentially result in an incarceration. They're not going to leave any stone unturned in terms of identifying who this party is," Green said.

With residents forced to park on neutral ground for at least another month due to the ongoing construction project, Raphael believes that action must be taken.
"They should at least inform us and give us a better date, a better time, and then stick by it because we, you know, our lives must go on. And it's a difficult situation that we're in right now," Raphael said.
