INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Indiana is expecting the threat of severe weather and flooding on Wednesday.
The threat of flooding will extend into the weekend, with multiple waves of rain ahead.
Tuesday night: Showers and storms will start to move into northe
rn Indiana after midnight. Lows in the mid 40s.
Wednesday: Be weather aware as we are tracking two rounds of showers and storms.
Round One: A warm front will push through the state and bring some showers and thunderstorms Wednesday morning. Timing looks to be roughly from 5-11 a.m. Wednesday, with some small hail possible.
Round Two: We’ll watch for redevelopment toward the late afternoon and nighttime hours, with the potential of strong to severe storms. Heavy rain could lead to some flash flooding.
There is a Moderate Risk (Level 4 of 5) of severe weather in southwestern Indiana. The remainder of Indiana sits in an Enhanced Risk (Level 3 of 5). All hazards are on the table, with wind being the main threat. Some storms may turn more significant and produce one or more gusts up to 75 mph, strong tornadoes with winds of 111 mph or more, and hail with a diameter of 2 inches or more.
The significant threat will depend on if supercells form and/or the incoming line along the cold front ingests more unstable air than expected. The threat is highlighted by the darkened shade with solid black outline.
We’re also expecting up from 1 to 3 inches of rain by Thursday morning, with some possible flash flooding.
Highs will soar back into the mid 70s due to a strong southerly wind that gusts up to 45 mph at times. Hence, wind advisories will be in place from 8 a.m. Wednesday to 1 a.m. Thursday.
Thursday: Rain turns more scattered for areas along and south of interstate 70. A front will begin to stall out south of Indianapolis, setting the stage for multiple waves of rain into the weekend. Highs will top out in the mid to upper 60s.
7-Day Forecast: The aforementioned front will keep central and southern Indiana within an increased flood risk. The next areas of concern for heavy rain will be Friday night into Saturday morning and late Saturday. Flood watches will begin Wednesday evening and carry through Sunday morning with rainfall totals expected to be from 4-7 inches through Sunday morning, with the highest totals in southern Indiana. Some rivers in southern Indiana could reach major flood stages, with spots in central Indiana maybe reaching at least moderate flood stages. Bottom line is widespread significant flooding will be possible in central and especially southern Indiana.
