FORSYTH COUNTY, N.C. (WGHP) -- A bond between a father and son was taken away by a deadly high-speed crash.
Fernando Medel made a promise that he will forever keep for his late-son 17-year-old Armando Ortiz.
"I will never get you in trouble because I'm you're daddy," Medel said. "He would smil
e all the time, and I've never seen him mad. Just happy smiling all time."
Medel says his son wanted to become a mechanic and had huge aspirations to play on the Glenn High School soccer team in Kernersville.
"He liked football ... His favorite team was ... Barcelona. His favorite player is Lionel Messi ... 'The plan we have is that I want to start working because I want to go to Spain and watch Barcelona. After that, I want to go see Messi.' I said, 'Go ahead,'" Medel said.
Ortiz's life was cut short last Thursday afternoon.
According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, around 4 p.m., the 17-year-old was driving west on Union Cross Road in Forsyth County when he crossed the center line, ran off the left side of the road and hit a tree head-on.
He died at the scene.
Investigators believe speed was a factor, and Ortiz's father says his son was coming home from school
"The day of his wreck ... it was speeding," Medel said.
As Medel and the surrounding community mourn this loss, he says he's staying strong for his daughter.
"She's 13 years old, and I have to be strong for her. I have to be real strong for her. My heart is broken in pieces, but I have to keep going," Medel said.
According to a spokesperson for Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools, they did have counselors on campus to support students.
The NCSHP said Ortiz was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. ...read more read less
