SCDP responds to Senator Cory Booker’s recordbreaking
Apr 01, 2025
Washington, D.C. (WOLO) — Tuesday New Jersey Democrat Senator Cory Booker broke the record for the longest floor speech in modern Senate history. Booker’s speech surpassed that of the late Senator Strom Thurmond’s speech surrounding the Civil Rights Act of 1957 which lasted 24 hours and 1
8 minutes. Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer interrupted the speech that was met with cheers from Democrats in the Chamber.
That speech, coming to an end 25 hours and four minutes later at 8:05 (ET) as he protested actions by the Trump Administration saying the country quote, “is in crisis.” Shortly after Senator Booker made the record- breaking speech, Chair for the South Carolina Democratic Party (SCDP), Christale Spain released a statement saying,
“Fighting back against Trump and Elon Musk’s sweeping changes, Senator Cory Booker has used the power of words to galvanize Democrats and in doing so broke South Carolina Senator Strom Thurmond’s record setting speech of 24 hours and 18 minutes against the Civil RIghts Act of 1957. It’s a record worth breaking! Almost 70 years later, Senator Booker used his voice to defend justice, not deny it. Senator Booker’s speech was not about breaking records – but a clarion call to those who believe every person matters, and in a government of the people, for the people and by the people. Senator Booker’s resolve demands that we keep up the fight.”
At the time of this posting, the South Carolina GOP has not commented on Senator Booker’s remarks.
