DANIEL ISLAND, S.C. (WCBD) - Over 300 volunteers help make the Charleston Open one of the best tennis tournaments in the entire world.
"As the tournament was getting started a friend asked me if I wanted to volunteer and I thought that sounded like a lot of fun," said north Mt. Pleasant's Ann Nod
tvedt.
This year marks 25 years Ann has volunteered. She is only one of ten that have been a part of every tournament.
The first eight years she helped call in scores on the court before electronics took over. The last 17 Nodtvedt has been a part of the volunteer services team.
A lot of fond memories over the past two and a half decades, but for her one stands out from year one.
"The first year was very memorable because it was all so new and it was just fun to watch everything run smoothly from the beginning. It's been fun to watch the changes but my favorite thing about doing this is the group of people that I work with."
While Ann's drive to the tennis center is a lot shorter than the international flights for some players.
Like the top draw, she looks forward to this tournament every year.
"And my family just knows every year when the first week of April comes around that mom's going to be busy for 10 days. So it's just a great experience."
Fans may only notice the top tier talent on stadium court on Daniel Island, but volunteers like Ann Nodtvedt help make this a must-see event for tennis fans year after year.
"This place is reflective, it's like a living room for Charleston. And so it's great to have people from out of town and even local people to come see the venue and just the level of excellence that I think this tournament provides." ...read more read less
