'This is what we've been waiting for': Red Wings GM talks home opener
Apr 01, 2025
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) - Before the Red Wings' home opener, general manager Dan Mason said he had some nerves ahead of the first game at Innovative Field.
"I always get butterflies every year on opening day. We have 75 home games a year, but there's only one opening day," he said. "So, this is w
hat we've been waiting for since the season ended last year. It's great to welcome our fans back home here at Innovative Field."
His butterflies may have gone away, though, as the Red Wings kept putting runs on the board, coming away with a dominant 10-1 victory against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs.
The Red Wings' at-bats were highlighted by Drew Millas, who had a home run and five RBIs.
With many skilled players like Millas on this year's roster, Mason said he's excited for the talent the group brings to games this season.
"I think we have a great mix of prospects as well as veterans. We have a lot of guys on our team with major league experience, so I think it's going to be a fun year," Mason said. "Of course, great leadership in our coaching staff led by Matt LeCroy here in his fifth year in Rochester. He's not only a great baseball man, but a great person, and we're very lucky to have him as our manager again this year."
To kick off LeCroy's fifth year at the helm, the organization unveiled a brand new practice facility called The Red Wings Performance Center to help players take their game to the next level.
"With the advent of our new performance center, it really sets us up as one of the best batting cages, weight rooms, video analysis rooms in all of baseball," Mason said. "Our batting cages are as good as some major league teams, and our players absolutely love it, our coaches love it, and it's going to be a great place for them to develop on their path to the major leagues."
The Red Wings continue their home-opening series on Wednesday, April 2nd. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. at Innovative Field.
