TOPEKA, Kan. (KSNW) — A new state grant program is putting small towns and their storefronts in the spotlight — literally.
The Kansas Department of Commerce has launched the Supporting Innovative Growth through New Signage (SIGNS) grant, a $250,000 initiative designed to help rural and small-
town businesses upgrade their signage and enhance the character of historic downtowns.

“Downtown districts are the heartbeat of our rural communities,” Lieutenant Governor and Secretary of Commerce David Toland said in a news release. “This program invests directly in locally owned businesses and their ability to attract more customers while preserving their community’s charm.”
The grant offers funding between $1,000 and $50,000 for qualifying signage projects. To be eligible, communities must propose signage for at least three buildings or businesses. The funding can be used for everything from sign design and lighting to purchase and installation.
Who can apply?
Eligible applicants include:
Business or building owners
Municipalities
Main Street organizations
Chambers of commerce
Tribal organizations
Nonprofit economic and community groups
Applicants must provide a cash match, with requirements based on population:
A 50% match for communities with 2,500–50,000 residents
A 25% match for communities with fewer than 2,500 residents
Focus on local charm
To maintain the historical appeal of Kansas downtowns, projects must align with Kansas Commerce Sign Guidelines. Preference will be given to three-dimensional signs created and installed by Kansas-based businesses.
“These investments in our downtowns and small businesses will foster growth and drive economic vitality across the state,” Matt Godinez, Assistant Secretary of Quality Places, said in the release.
Applications will be reviewed monthly on a first-come, first-served basis until all funds are awarded. Projects must be completed within six months of approval and comply with all state and local regulations.
