Topeka Rescue Mission prepared to shelter homeless if tornado dangers arise
Apr 01, 2025
TOPEKA (KSNT) - The Topeka Rescue Mission (TRM) is taking steps to help keep homeless people safe if a tornado warning happens.
The TRM says if the outdoor warning sirens go off, they plan to open a few rooms for people needing shelter. Topekans are no stranger to high winds and major thundersto
rms. However, if things escalate to tornado levels, it gets uncertain for those who don't have shelter.
Similar to the warming centers TRM opens in the winter, they're making space for people to escape the tornado warning if one happens.
"The people out on the streets are like you and I," Deputy Director of Shelter Services Christian Stringfellow said. "They're people. Whenever there's a situation that's coming up that we'd be afraid of, we want to find a place that would be secure and would be safe, so it's always helpful when there's resources or places in the community that people can go."

Shawnee County Emergency Management says each outdoor warning siren is ready to go if needed. However, they are designed to notify people who are outside, so people should not rely on them as their primary warning.
