'Career criminal' is back behind Albuquerque bars for gun possession charges

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) — A career criminal who has made headlines for over 14 years is behind bars again after violating his probation in a federal gun case from 2015. In February, the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Office was tipped off to his whereabouts, leading to his arrest.

Deputies saw Nicholas Blume driving in northeast Albuquerque. He sold a car to a woman, and was taking her to it, when several deputies trapped his grey Mercedes in a parking lot at the corner of Montgomery and Monroe.
Upon making contact, deputies told Blume to put his hands up and not to run, or force will be used. Blume complied with these orders before being taken into custody. Leading up to that, Blume told deputies he was not trying to run. "I was getting ready to turn myself in," Blume said. "I swear it on my life."
Upon searching the vehicle, a gun was found in the back, leading to this exchange captured by a dashcam:
Deputies: "What's up with the strap?"Blume: "What strap?"Deputies: "In your car."Blume: "I ain't got a strap."Deputies: "You don't have a strap in your car?"Blume: "I don't have a strap."
The gun was later determined to be stolen. Blume has been charged with possession of a firearm by a felon and receiving stolen property. He is awaiting his probation violation hearing for his federal case.
Back in 2011, Blume was involved in an excessive force case settled by the city. He had been caught after crashing a stolen truck and running from police. When the officers caught up with Blume, they beat him. That case was settled in 2015 with the City of Albuquerque paying him over $140,000. The two officers were fired. ...read more read less
