JOHNSTON, R.I. (WPRI) — When waste that can't be recycled ends up in a recycling bin, the contents of the entire bin may get tossed in a landfill.
The rejected waste ends up costing taxpayers as municipalities pay fines for the rejected loads.
Here's a guide to what you can and can't put in
your recycling bins, according to advice from the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation:
Can:
Paper
Cardboard
Cartons
Metal cans
Metal lids
Foil
Glass bottles
Glass jars
Plastic containers
Plastic bottles
Can't:
Shredded paper
Straws
Wood
Textiles
Dirty containers
Plastic bags of any kind
Full cartons, containers or bottles
Greasy pizza boxes
Dirty foil
Foam containers
Containers that once held flammable materials
Containers that once held oily materials
It's important to make sure anything you recycle is clean and empty.
