WEST WARWICK, R.I. (WPRI) — Police have arrested a Providence man accused of assaulting a nonverbal autistic resident at a West Warwick group home earlier this year, 12 News has learned.
Jordan Oliveira, 27, has been charged with abuse, neglect or exploitation of an adult with severe impairment
s. He faced a judge Monday and was released on $5,000 personal recognizance, per court records.
Oliveira was taken into custody back in January after the house manager was made aware of the assault by other staffers at the group home, according to court documents obtained by 12 News.
The victim, identified in the court documents as a 31-year-old man, suffers from severe autism and has limitations with "self-care, communication, receptive or expressive language, self-direction, and the capacity for independent living."
The court documents note that three other staffers witnessed the assault, one of which recorded it on their cell phone.
The footage shows Oliveira pinning the victim down on the couch by his shoulders and slapping him across the face "approximately eight times," according to the court documents.
Oliveira then chases the victim out of camera view, during which "another slap and scream by the victim is heard," before dragging him back to the couch and continuing to slap his face.
Court documents reveal that the victim suffered injuries to his lip, bruising to his cheeks and a laceration on his right knee.
Oliveira was ordered to stay away from the victim and the group home. He was also ordered to undergo mental health counseling prior to his next court date, which is slated for July 7.
It's unclear whether Oliveira still works for the group home, which court documents indicate is managed by Community Living of Rhode Island. 12 News has reached out to Community Living of Rhode Island regarding Oliveira's employment status but has not yet heard back.
