COURTLAND, Va. (WAVY) — The jury in the murder case against James Goodwyn Jr. saw the murder weapon and grim scenes inside the home of Cynthia Carver, 36, who was killed in the spring of 2019.

ces one count of first-degree murder in Carver's 2019 death.
A man from North Carolina testified Tuesday afternoon for the Commonwealth that he had a relationship with Carver, and had sex with her the day before she went missing.
On cross-examination, Defense Attorney James Ellenson asked the married man if he was sorry that Carver is dead. The man responded yes — and said six years later, his wife does not know about it to this day.
Several current and retired officers from the Southampton County Sheriff's Office described the bloody scene inside Carver’s Everett Street home in Newsoms.
Inside the two bedroom home were several spots of blood in the living room, hallway and kitchen.
Body camera video played for the jury had the voice of a detective saying “lots of blood, here’s a knife, it’s got blood all over it" as they searched the residence.
The jury saw the knife — a wood handle serrated edge with a blade about six inches long. The jury also saw Goodwyn’s white and gray Nike sneakers, which the Commonwealth said matches bloody footprints inside the house.
A sheriff’s captain showed the jury a fingernail that was recovered from the living room floor, which the Commonwealth said contains Goodwyn’s DNA. Prosecution photos of Carver‘s body had a fingernail missing from the middle finger of her right hand.
Investigators also found a bloody shirt on the ground a few feet from the steps that led to the entrance of the house. It had several holes in it, and Carver’s autopsy indicates multiple stab blooms to her neck, torso and vaginal area.
Cynthia Carver was first reported missing Feb. 22, 2019.
Carver had dropped off her two daughters with family friend Sheila Sledge the night before.
Her mother, Ann Carver, called 911, and deputies responded about 1 p.m.
About a month later in March 2019, Cynthia Carver‘s body was found off Winona Trail just off a logging path in Suffolk.
A Franklin Lumber employee was driving through the area when his two dogs got restless inside the vehicle. He stopped, and his shorthaired pointer ran to an area off a logging trail. The dog’s owner went to investigate and saw Carver‘s body about 15 feet from the logging trail.
Carver was found face down in a marshy area, her underwear had been pulled down to her ankles.
Goodwin was arrested three months after that at his girlfriend‘s home on Edna Way in Virginia Beach and charged with Carver’s murder.
The case is expected to last into the middle of next week. If convicted, Goodwyn would face from 20 years to life in prison.
