MidSouth braces for severe storms and possible tornadoes
Apr 01, 2025
MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The Mid-South is already seeing severe thunderstorms, bringing with them heavy rain, large hail, and some tornadoes.
Another round of storms is expected to hit Memphis with a "Moderate Risk" (level 4/5) for severe weather on Wednesday afternoon into the night. This comes as Marc
h kicked off tornado season, which will last through June.
Severe Threat Wednesday, Late-Week Flooding Concerns
Many people in the Mid-South are now bracing for strong winds and the possibility of flash flooding.
"You don't want to wait until the storm is actually taking place to be ready, you want to prepare on days like today," said Keith Staples with Shelby County Emergency Management.
It is important to be aware of the difference between a "tornado watch" and a "tornado warning."
A tornado watch is issued when all of the elements needed for a tornado to form are present, meaning one could form in the area a watch was issued. Those in the area should be prepared and stay alert in case a tornado warning is issued.
A tornado warning is issued when a tornado has been spotted on the ground in the specified area, or is about to form, as indicated by a weather radar. If a tornado warning is issued, those in the area should take shelter immediately.
"Stay away from the windows, get into a center room, preferably a closet or the center of your home," said Staples.

And if you find yourself driving when the storms hit, Staples says you should "turn around and don't drown."
Just six inches of flood water can knock over an adult, and twelve inches of rushing water can carry your car away.
It is never too early to prepare, but it can be too late.
It is recommended to keep an emergency kit in your car and important to have multiple ways to receive weather information. Download the WREG weather app for real-time updates and alerts.
As Wednesday's weather event has the potential to move into the overnight hours, you should keep your phone volume up and your ringer on while you sleep in case a severe weather alert is issued in your area, prompting you to take action.
