KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Merchants in a quiet neighborhood are suddenly on guard.
Vita’s Place, a popular wine bar in the Crestwood Shops near East 55th Street and Oak Street, was broken into this past weekend.

Ryan Sciara has operated the cozy spot for about a year. Early Sunday morning, someone made a mess of the store’s front door.
Video from the store’s security cameras show an alleged crook trying to kick through the bar’s backdoor around 12:20 a.m. When he didn’t succeed, he used a heavy item from a neighbor’s front yard to shatter the business’ glass front door.
“When you watch the videos, it feels like he was here for 10-15 minutes,” Sciara said on Tuesday.
Video clips show it all lasted around four minutes. Sciara said the bar’s front door is custom made, and it will cost as much as $2,000 to make a new one.
He also told Kansas City police officers the alleged criminal took three bottles of booze and a couple of hundred dollars in cash.
“I think about my employees, and the culture we've built here is more of a family. To think that somebody treated our house like that, it pissed everybody off,” Sciara said.
Neighboring merchants also complain of an increase in property crimes. Kansas City Police Department crime maps don’t indicate other recent thefts in that area of the city.
“I'm just really sorry this happened to Ryan and his company. No one wants this to happen. I hear that we're going to try to get cameras. Hopefully, that happens soon,” Kloe LeFevre, who works at the nearby interior design firm, said.

Sciara also owns Underdog Wine Company. He said it was within the past year that a different man walked in and took two bottles of alcohol in broad daylight. He and other merchants are taking precautions. ...read more read less
