Judge rules Platte County doesn't have to implement children's health tax

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- A Platte County, Missouri judge has ruled that the county's commissioners do not have to implement a child services tax.

In mid-December, the three-member county commission voted not to implement it, saying because of the way state law is worded. They say it authorized the commission to levy the tax, but just because the majority of voters said they wanted this doesn’t mean it’s automatically instituted.
Supporters of the tax sued the county in court. On Tuesday, that judge sided with the county, saying while voters did approve of it, the county's not legally obligated to do so.
Voters in 11 other Missouri counties, including Jackson and Clay, have passed similar taxes for similar purposes. The quarter-cent sales tax would raise between $5 and $6 million each year to be used to help kids going through a mental health crisis. ...read more read less
