How you can add your name to an Indy 500 car for a good cause
Apr 01, 2025
ZIONSVILLE, Ind. -- Among the sponsors on Graham Rahal’s ride for the 109th running of the Indianapolis 500 will be a collection of names zooming along with him.
Each represents a donation made to help veterans. For the past few months, hundreds of people have made a donation of at least $50 t
o have their names or the name of someone else added to the Rahal Letterman Lanigan No. 15 United Rentals Honda.
”100% of the proceeds, all the money, will go to help our veterans," said Graham Rahal. "So we felt like it was a great thing and it's going to be very cool to see all the names on the car in Indy."
The initiative is called Riding with Rahal and it will support Turns for Troops, a cause Rahal and his team have supported since United Rentals became an RLL sponsor in 2016.
For every INDYCAR lap Rahal completes, United Rentals donates $50 to Turns for Troops. Over the nearly 10 years, the organization has donated more than $2.5 million. The Riding With Rahal funds will add to that this year.
”We thought what a great way to honor veterans and others who have served by putting their name on a racecar for the Indy 500 on Memorial Day Weekend," said Jeremy Fountain, the director of PR and Marketing with United Rentals.
Riding With Rahal began on Veterans Day 2024 but really took off in January when RLL co-owner David Letterman told people about it in a video message.
”I’m supporting, as well. My second cousin, Maj. Johnathan Letterman, the father of battlefield medicine, will be on the car," Letterman said in the video.
There are hundreds of names ready to be added to Rahal's Indy 500 livery.
”It’s taken off," Fountain said. "I think this morning we have over 750 individual donations."
All of those names will be added to the side pods and rear wing of the car. Fountain said they've had to move some things around to make the space.
”Essentially scaling back some of the United Rentals branding and making some spots," he said.
So far, the donations have exceeded $52,000. That's more than $2,000 over their initial goal, with all of the money going to Turns For Troops.
”I just think veterans, they need our support more than people recognize," Rahal said. "There's a lot of veterans that are left high and dry that have a lot of issues whether it be paralysis which we work on, whether it be PTSD."
There’s still time to add your name or honor a friend or family member on Rahal’s Indy 500 ride. You can sign up and donate at the Riding With Rahal website.
If you do donate, you'll soon see the name you submitted on an Indy 500 racecar.
”Couple more weeks and we’ll unveil the car," Rahal said. "We’ll show off all those names and then, of course, right there after we'll be on track. I can't wait."
The deadline to submit a name and make a donation to Riding With Rahal is Friday, April 4. ...read more read less
