INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — Governor Mike Braun signed two executive orders Tuesday to enhance customer service for Hoosiers by modernizing technology at the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) and streamlining the permitting process in Indiana’s transportation network.
Braun’s first order focuses
on updating the BMV’s digital systems, specifically the System Tracking and Record Support (STARS) software, which was implemented in 2004 and now costs around $10 million annually to maintain.
The second order aims to reform the Indiana Department of Transportation’s permitting process by establishing uniform standards and improving the Electronic Permit System across the state.
Braun emphasized the importance of the BMV as a point of interaction between residents and the government, highlighting the need for best-in-class customer service.
For the transportation network, the executive order mandates a comprehensive review of INDOT’s permitting processes. This includes the establishment of uniform statewide standards and the modernization of the Electronic Permit System.
“The Crossroads of America has to be the gold standard for transportation permitting, and that means clarity, predictability, and best-in-class customer service. This new permitting modernization effort led by the Office of Transportation and Infrastructure will streamline the process with uniform statewide standards, an improved Electronic Permit System, and clear regulatory requirements available to all applicants,” Braun said in the press release.
