Mackinac Bridge in Upper Peninsula closed temporarily due to falling ice hazard

MACKINAW CITY, Mich. (WFRV) – The Mackinac Bridge connecting Michigan’s Upper Peninsula with the Lower Peninsula is closed temporarily after large chunks of ice fell from the bridge, nearly striking a vehicle.
According to the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), camera footage shows
the ice falling directly in front of a vehicle, narrowly missing the hood.

"Fortunately, nobody was hurt, but it clearly illustrates why closures are necessary in falling ice conditions," stated the MDOT.
As of now, there is no estimate for when the bridge will reopen. MDOT noted that sunny skies and warmer temperatures are helping shed the accumulated ice, though falling ice continues to pose a risk.

The shortest recorded bridge closure occurred on Nov. 29, 2001, lasting just 37 minutes, while the longest lasted 20 hours and 15 minutes on Feb. 23, 2019.
