Deputies remind students to stay safe on prom night
Apr 01, 2025
COLUMBIA, SC (WOLO) — Prom season is quickly approaching for many high schoolers across the Midlands. And while it’s meant to be a memorable night for young students — filled with dancing, dresses, and tuxedos, Master Deputy Thomas Collins says its important to make it memorable for the rig
ht reasons.
“Make sure you have planned a safe ride home. And that if you do ride with somebody, make sure you’re with somebody who is not intoxicated or under the influence of some type of substance. If you are one of the drivers of the vehicles, everybody’s safety is in your hands,” he says.
This means obeying the speed limit and limiting distractions.
“And by being able to make sure you’re aware of your surroundings and not looking at your phone while you’re driving. I know it’s tempting to get back to that text message, but I promise you it can wait. Because it can be the difference between getting in a collision and going home safe,” says Collins.
Master Deputies Destiny Haynes and Benjamin Arrowood, say it also means letting your parents know where you are at all times.
“Look into getting the “Life 360” app. That app really really helps. It allows parents to be able to see where you are, be able to see if you were in a collision, be able to know your speeds, and you’ll be able to check in. Just look into “Life 360″ — or share your location with somebody so somebody can know your location at all times,” says Master Deputy Haynes.
“Make sure your cell phones are charged, check in with your parents, and be mindful of your curfew,” says Master Deputy Arrowood.
And remember, says Master Deputy Juana Washington — this is your night to prove to your parents that you can be a responsible young adult.
“This is the one night that the kids get to be independent, they get to be out on their own. Parents are trusting them to do the right thing. So you actually want to continue to do these things. So if you want mom to allow you to go out by yourself again, show her that you’re a responsible adult. We’re gonna have on our nice gowns and our tuxedos. Mom paid a lot of money for our hair and our makeup, and we want to make sure that we’re gonna have a good time and be safe so have fun — but be safe! And responsible!” she says.
