Pueblo Police investigating death of suspect in custody

(PUEBLO, Colo.) — The Pueblo Police Department (PPD) is investigating a death that occurred after arresting a suspect.
On Saturday, March 29, at around 11:28 p.m., Pueblo Police received a report of a vehicle traveling the wrong way, southbound in the northbound lanes of I-25 and Highway 50, t
hat almost hit an officer's car. Some time after, officers were dispatched to Dillon Drive and Cesar Chavez Boulevard on report of a crash.
Upon arrival, officers learned from witnesses that the suspect vehicle was the same as the wrong-way car. The suspect had allegedly been driving northbound on Dillon Dr. at a high rate of speed, failed to stop at a red light, and hit a white BMW. After crashing, the suspect tried to steal another car by forcibly removing the driver.
Witnesses were able to help the driver, an off-duty Douglas County Sheriff's Office deputy, in detaining the suspect until officers arrived at 11:38 p.m. The Pueblo Traffic Investigation Unit and Investigations Division were dispatched to further investigate and process the scene. Both the driver of the BMW and off-duty deputy were treated on scene for minor injuries.
According to PPD, the suspect was acting erratically and was detained for suspicion of Driving Under the Influence/Driving Under the Influence of Drugs and Aggravated Robbery. He was checked on scene by ambulance personnel before being taken to the hospital by an officer for a blood sample and jail medical clearance.
Upon arriving at the hospital, the suspect became unresponsive. Life-saving measures were attempted but were unsuccessful, and the suspect was pronounced dead.
The 10th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) has been activated and will be led by the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office (PCSO), who will conduct the investigation. ...read more read less
