ROCKDALE, Texas (KXAN) -- An Austin woman was arrested and charged with capital murder in connection with the death of her mother in Rockdale on Monday evening, according to police.
Brittney Shields, 35, of Austin, was identified by the Rockdale Police Department as the suspect in the death of he
r mother, Stephanie McBride, 58, of Rockdale.
Rockdale Police Chief Jerry Meadors that officers responded to a 911 call reporting a “deceased female” in a residence in the 600 block of Rice Street on Monday around 5:13 p.m.
"We saw the suspect leaving the scene with two small children, speaking with family members we learned were [Shields'] children," Meadors said. "Obviously with the severity of the crime, we felt the children’s safety was in danger."
That's when Meadors said the department worked with the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) to issue an Amber Alert Monday evening for a 5-year-old and a 6-year-old who were last seen where McBride was killed.
The Amber Alert was discontinued late Monday night, and Rockdale Police noted in the Facebook post that “Shields' children were also recovered, and were unharmed.” The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services told KXAN Tuesday afternoon the children were in the state's care and staff are "working to ensure that all of their needs are met."
Meadors said the preliminary investigation indicates the children were inside the house when Shields allegedly shot McBride.
Officers found McBride dead at the scene and said she had multiple gunshot wounds, according to the post. Milam County Justice of Peace Greg Hoelscher pronounced McBride dead at the scene and ordered an autopsy to be conducted, police said.
Police said evidence at the scene led them to “quickly obtain an arrest warrant for McBride’s daughter,” and that police believe she was the only person involved in the homicide.
"Shields ended up ultimately giving us a full confession," Meadors said. He added that neither Shields nor McBride were known to the Rockdale Police Department.
However, Meadors also stated that "I don't personally know [McBride], but she's well known in the community. It was very apparent she touched many lives... she was very loved."
Travis County Jail online records show that she was booked into custody overnight after being arrested by the Austin Police Department. Jail records show she is facing an out-of-county felony charge and is being held in the Travis County Jail for another agency with no bond.
